Plateau Systems Chief Technology Officer to Speak at ASTD 2005

Ed Cohen to Present on Standards in the Learning Industry

Arlington, Va.• June 2, 2005 - Plateau Systems, a leading provider of software for developing, managing and optimizing organizational skills and talent, today announced that its Chief Technology Officer Ed Cohen is speaking at the ASTD 2005 International Conference & Exposition in Orlando, Fla., June 5-9. Cohen will be addressing "The Future of Standards in the Learning Industry" on Sunday, June 5 at 2:15 PM EDT.

Cohen will open his discussion with a history and explanation of existing e-Learning standards, including Aviation Industry Computer Based Training Committee (AICC), Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM), IMS Global Learning Consortium (IMS) and International Electrical and Electronic Engineering Association (IEEE), and will showcase industry best practices for each of these standards. Additionally, Cohen will discuss standards that fall outside the typical e-Learning purview, such as portal standards like JSR 168, that are critical for e-Learning initiatives. Next, Cohen will speak to the benefits of using combinations of standards to build a maintainable, scaleable architecture. In conclusion, he will predict where e-Learning standards are headed, and how he anticipates they will affect the process of learning overall.

Cohen is an active member of AICC, one of the main standards-setting and certification organizations for the learning industry. He is chairman of the AICC infrastructure subcommittee and has been a driving force within the Package Exchange Notification Services (PENS) working subcommittee, designed to establish standards for integration between learning management systems and content providers. He is also a member of the ASTD Brain Trust.
