Nuclear Management Co. LLC Selects Plateau 4 LMS to Strategically Manage Training Records and Web-based Training Across its Enterprise

Enterprise-Wide Learning System to Lower Training Costs and Create System-Wide Efficiencies in Human Capital Management and Regulatory Compliance

ARLINGTON, Va., February 25, 2004 — Plateau Systems, the leading provider of enterprise software that manages learning and knowledge readiness, announced today that Nuclear Management Company, LLC (NMC) has selected Plateau 4 Learning Management System (LMS) to manage, track and deploy training records and Web-based learning across the organization, in support of multiple business and regulatory compliance objectives. Plateau 4 LMS will help NMC leverage its company size, industry best practices and current technologies in support of its overall strategy as a recognized leader in nuclear power generation.

On a business level, Plateau 4 LMS gives NMC a single platform to efficiently and strategically manage training and qualification records. NMC is using Plateau 4 LMS to consolidate more than one million training records at seven different facilities, including six nuclear power plants in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Plateau's software provides NMC's 3,500 workers with immediate intranet access to training schedules, personal training histories and qualification records.

On an operational level, the LMS enhances organizational readiness and enables the company to better direct employee qualification progress and eligibility for proper job task assignment.

"Supervisors in particular need the ability to very quickly - and easily - identify which employees are qualified to do what jobs, and the qualification structure within Plateau 4 LMS allows us to do that," said Barry J. Wallace, NMC Fleet Training Programs and Processes Manager. "Our analysis of the available products showed Plateau 4 LMS to be at a level of maturity that places it as a leader in the industry, and it was clearly the best fit for our needs."

NMC's nuclear plants produce 4,500 megawatts of power and serve customers in four different states. Wallace points to several business areas where NMC will benefit from Plateau's software, including:

  • Efficiency: Nuclear power plants operate 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Workers on weekend or night shifts can access and complete required training during downtime on these shifts without the need for an instructor to be physically present. In addition, should changes to a Web-based lesson plan become necessary, they are made in a single place - the server that hosts the software - and 4,000 people across seven geographic locations will be able to review updated materials instantly, saving both time and duplication efforts.
  • Cost avoidance: Nuclear workers are required to attend mandated training annually. NMC expects to use Plateau 4 LMS to reduce the time employees spend on this training event from a half a day - including travel time - to a mere 40 minutes.
  • Human Capital Management: NMC policy dictates that only qualified workers be assigned work in NMC facilities. Currently, qualification records for employees working in a nuclear facility must be maintained onsite. Since NMC frequently loans workers from one facility to another, qualification documentation must either be physically transported with the employee or sent by fax. The LMS will provide a single online source where all qualifications can be viewed from any of the seven company locations - and at anytime.

"By tying employee training to corporate vision and business strategy, NMC sets itself apart as an innovative and thought-leading company within the power industry," said Paul Sparta, Chairman and CEO of Plateau Systems. "Plateau looks forward to helping NMC integrate enterprise level learning technology into its corporate employee training program."
