Plateau Offers Multiple Language Support on One System

Plateau 4 LMS Supports Internationalization and Localization at Lower Cost, Using Less Bandwidth and IT Infrastructure

ARLINGTON, VA January 23, 2002 Plateau Systems, a provider of enterprise software that manages learning and knowledge processes for organizations, today announced Plateau 4 Learning Management System's support of multiple languages on a single database, creating an efficient platform for organizations to internationalize (I18N) their learning initiatives.

Using Plateau 4 LMS as the engine for global learning, organizations can deliver knowledge and store student data in any language or multi-byte character set. Plateau's UTF-8 support allows these languages and character sets to be displayed in data fields using a single database instance and a single application server. Without this technology, companies have to set up multiple application servers to support the use of separate languages.

Using one database instance for multiple languages - and separating the user interface from the core instruction code so it doesn't have to be recompiled - lowers IT infrastructure costs, uses less bandwidth and more efficiently manages data. Plateau supports English, German, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Portuguese at the learner's Web browser.

In the last year, Plateau has expanded its commitment to global learning by allowing organizations to create learning and knowledge management initiatives that take into account local languages, currencies, time zones, holidays and learning cultures. Plateau customers with global operations include Motorola, Alcon, Nestle, AstraZeneca, the U.S. Air Force and KSU the Swedish Nuclear Training and Safety Center. Plateau currently provides learning and knowledge infrastructure for Global 2000 corporations in all industries, as well as government agencies, the U.S. military and nonprofit associations.

Plateau 4 LMS' J2EE/EJB architecture is particularly suited to global learning initiatives. This open, Java-based architecture allows organizations to both localize and internationalize learning management. Plateau 4 LMS' domain structure lets administrators at the local level manage their data, while providing an overall view to the corporate body. By standardizing learning on one scalable platform, organizations are able to tie learning and knowledge management from all divisions directly to corporate goals.

Plateau 4 LMS provides the flexibility and open architecture needed to create a truly global learning program, said Ed Cohen, Plateau's Chief Technology Officer. Our approach to multi-language support highlights our commitment to using technology that is easily implemented and able to meet the needs of any enterprise.
